Clearly I m a complete idiot because I forgot that on February 21, 1965, Malcolm X was assasinated by three gunmen while on stage at the Manhattan Audobon Ballroom. He was a special man, because at a time when everyone wanted to pretend everything was OK and that problems could be solved with patience and collaboration, he was not afraid to strongly come out against the injustices black people were forced to live with every day and be the public voice of the angry inner city. So when people criticize Obama's patriotism, I hope they are thinking about Malcolm X because were it not for his brazen rejection of American ideals, we would not even be in the position to have a black man running for presidency today.
And how sweet is this picture? It was taken on March 1, 1964 at the Trans-Lux Newsreel theater in NYC. They had just viewed a film about Ali's fight with Sonny Liston. How good it must have felt to be there, walking amongst our giants and gods.
