I cannot even begin to express my joy at seeing major publications featuring African models. And nothing can be bigger than a multiple-paged spread in the Times or Vogue. So, I must admit to being extremely happy for Liya Kebede and Yasmin Warsame for accomplishing this. However, it is a short-lived triumph once you consider the... well, the inconsideration of the creative directors/whoever is responsible. Namibia and Timbuktu are no more than locations/exotic backgrounds for these ridiculously extravagant shoots and it is very obvious that the people over at Vogue/Times used these photo shoots as an excuse to exercise some sort of colonial fantasy.
